Week summary
  • A lot of new smartphones were announced by all major players at 3GSM - and features are quite similar (even for former messaging-centered devices like Ogo and Blackberry). So the time now is be different in services offered by default - and to make money there. Ways are to partner with major portal providers and at the same time to offer own (open to developers and 3rd parties) applications. Seems that now support for Windows mobile and Nokia's Series 60 is taken for granted (including VoIP applications).
  • Meanwhile small middleware suppliers (like e.g. Berkut and First Hop) are not just providing cheaper versions of standard stuff (like SMS center) but are also offering innovative premium applications. Could that be a reason behind LogicaCMG getting rid of its' SMS center division?
  • Google starts to provide corporate push e-mail.
  • Boingo offers cheap flat-rate WiFi for mobiles.
  • mdog.com transcoding is now good enough for Wall Street Journal Online.
  • Opera 9 goes mobile.
