| Carrier and Phone Companies to Jointly Develop Platform for 3G Mobile Phone Handsets Original news source |
| NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Renesas Technology Corp., Fujitsu Limited, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Sharp Corporation, and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, announced that they plan to jointly develop a next-generation mobile phone platform for dual-mode handsets supporting HSDPA2/W-CDMA (3G) and GSM/GPRS/EDGE (2G). Development of the platform is targeted to complete during Q2, FY2008 (July-September).
The six companies agreed to the joint development project in an effort to provide a platform with advanced functionality for 3G mobile phones. The new platform will be based on the SH-Mobile G3, a single-chip system LSI which implements a baseband processor supporting HSDPA/W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE communications and an application processor with high-end multimedia functions, together with a reference design integrating audio, power supply, and RF front-end modules. The platform will also include common software for basic functions, including a sophisticated operating system such as Symbian, device drivers, middleware, and communication software. |

The VimpelCom offering will consist of a Push Email solution, ICQ Instant Messaging service and RSS support. The email platform will support attachments such as Word, Images, PDF documents, and Presentations. |

| Visa International and SK Telecom announced plans to launch what they expect to be the world's first contactless payment application on a universal SIM (USIM) card which is personalized over-the-air (OTA). Visa and SK Telecom plan to implement this large-scale commercial service in South Korea in April 2007 with an OTA solution based on Visa's recently announced mobile platform. The two organizations also agreed to develop new business models and to seek business opportunities overseas by spreading the OTA-based USIM service. Overseas cooperation activities will include efforts to establish global standards for OTA personalization based on the platform being utilized in the Visa - SK Telecom program. |

| The X-Series from 3, developed in partnership with Ericsson, marks a turning point in mobile services - making popular internet applications available on mobile handsets on the 3 network in the UK.
Within their UK Managed Services partnership, Ericsson and 3 developed the X-Series, a new service that includes services from Skype, Sling, Orb, Yahoo!, Microsoft Windows Live Messenger, eBay and Google from their mobile phones.
During the project, Ericsson was responsible for assisting in the end-to-end services development and delivering the systems integration. Ericsson also provided solution design, development, verification and integration services. The project involved many aspects of the 3 business, including handsets, core network, IP, billing, customer care and content management.
3 developed the global partnerships with the leading Internet brands included in the X-Series service and also developed the branding, marketing and flat rate mobile broadband pricing. |

| Indian mobile operator Idea Cellular, Ericsson and the GSM Association's Development Fund have teamed up to develop biofuels as a source of power for wireless networks in rural India. In a pilot project in Pune, Maharashtra, the three organizations will begin using biofuels to power mobile base stations located beyond the reach of the electricity grid.
The first phase of the project, which is testing the feasibility of non-edible plant-based fuels, such as cotton and jatropha, is nearing completion. The second phase of the project will entail setting up a supply chain using locally grown crops to produce biodiesel to power between five and 10 base stations in the Maharashtra region. The goal is to have these base stations powered by cotton or jatropha by mid-2007. |

| 3Way Networks, the 3G niche infrastructure developer has launched the 3Way HBS, commercially available 3G Femto cell. The UMTS HBS (Home Base Station) is designed to enable mobile operators to provide a bubble of coverage and capacity in customer’s homes and offer low cost mobile voice, video and data services.
The fixed mobile convergence market (FMC) is starting to gain significant momentum with BT launching its BT Fusion service in the UK and a number of manufacturers recently launching dual mode wireless LAN handsets. But unlike Fusion-type technologies which use Bluetooth or Wifi to create the home network, the femto-cells will use standard 2G or 3G radio technologies.
The HBS connects to the end user’s DSL or cable modem and securely routes voice and data traffic to and from the mobile operator’s network via the existing broadband link. When users of the HBS arrive home their handset automatically camps on the HBS giving them the advantages of better coverage, higher data rates and lower call costs while they are at home. |

| SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc., provider of GPS-enabled silicon and premium software location platforms, introduced the SiRFstarIII GSD3t, a Multimode Aided-GPS Satellite Signal Processor, in an extremely small-footprint, that brings industry leading SiRFstarIII GPS performance to price-conscious and space-constrained mobile devices such as cell phones. Available in an extremely thin package, less than 10 square millimeter in size, the GSD3t combines radio frequency, as well as analog and signal processing functionalities in a single 90 nm RFCMOS die. The GSD3t takes full advantage of SiRF’s Adaptive Power Management and Trickle Power technology to deliver high performance while consuming very low power.
Minimizing the loading but taking advantage of the host platform resources, the GSD3t allows manufacturers to add GPS functionality to their products at minimal cost in terms of components and circuit board area, achieving SiRFstarIII performance in the most economical way. The GEOS System is a range of travel safety and travel security services, which offer travel safety and comprehensive travel security by using Benefon’s GPS technology. Benefon’s devices allow Travel Safety Group (TSG) and its GEOS program to offer an entire range of services.

| Telecom Italia and Polymer Vision announced an agreement which will see the leading operator of the Italian mobile industry and the pioneers of the rollable display industry join to develop and launch the world’s first rollable display enabled mobile device to market in 2007. While smaller than a typical mobile phone, the new device features a display which extends up to 5-inches and may simply be stored away after use by folding it, thanks to the flexibility of the polymer based display material. The device features the largest display available in the industry for the same form factor, the 16 grey levels combined with a high contrast and high reflectivity display for paper like reading experience enables comfortable reading, even in bright sunlight. Future developments include colour and moving image capable display. The rollable display enables reading entire newspapers as well as books that can be delivered and bought through TIM’s mobile network via a regular SIM Card within the device - and then stored in the terminal’s memory which will be extremely large (starting from 4 Gigabytes available in the first models).

| Nokia announced that it is making its smart2go mapping and navigation platform available for free download , enabling millions of people to use the most comprehensive map coverage offered on a mobile device. The platform allows for mapping and routing in over 150 countries and has support for full turn-by-turn satellite navigation in over 30 countries. The application allows people to view where they are on a map, search for points-of-interests (POI) around them and create routes to get them there free of charge. Nokia plans to start offering the smart2go application for free, on Saturday, February 10th, for selected Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices initially and has plans to roll out support for most of the major mobile OS platforms including Nokia S60, Series 40, PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices.
Nokia plans to pre-install the smart2go mapping and navigation application on all future Nokia Nseries multimedia computers under the name "Nokia Maps". Current owners of Nokia devices may also download Nokia Maps to their supported devices. | Microsoft unveiled a new version of its Windows operating system for mobile devices, making it look more like Windows Vista and adding features previously only available on personal computers.
Called Windows Mobile 6 and available in the second quarter of 2007, it introduces the ability to view e-mails in their original HTML Internet format with live Web links from advanced mobile phones, generally referred to as smartphones.
Windows Mobile 6 also includes Windows Live, which allows instant messaging with more than one person at a time and can send a file or image, or record and send voice notes.
Windows Mobile 6 users can also view, navigate and edit documents in the original Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint format, without affecting tables, images or text. Windows Mobile 6 also has new security features. |

| Gemalto and Abaxia, specialist in Mobile Desktop solutions, announces the launch of a complete package that will enable the dynamic management of on-device services. This innovative solution relies on the new generation of multimedia SIM cards from Gemalto associated with an over the air (OTA) infrastructure. This combination will give mobile operators greater control of the handset user interface (UI) by allowing them to manage the way users access the handset’s internal phone features and menus. It will also increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) generated by data services. Gemalto announces the official launch of the MaXSSIMM program, aimed at establishing and promoting a new industrial standard for mobile multimedia services. The program is supported by France's AII (industrial innovation agency), and is intended to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of personalized and secure Internet services for mobile phones. These include personal data management and the transfer of protected multimedia content from one device to another. The Gemalto-led consortium created to implement MaXSSIMM will put forward a solution comprised of prototypes in 2008. Live trials using the finalized technologies will be conducted in 2009.
The aim of MaXSSIMM is to design a complete solution ("max-SIM" card, mobile phone and operator servers) allowing application developers to rapidly roll out new multimedia services on mobile phones. The proposed technological innovations will lead to greater personalization of mobile phones, making services easier to use and multimedia content easier to access via a unified user interface. They will also enable users to synchronize their personal data with their PC, PDA or their operator's server. The solution will ensure secure transmission and data confidentiality in an environment offering enhanced services, contents and devices. |
