Firetide Inc., a developer of wireless multi-service mesh technology, announced that the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has awarded service provider and Firetide partner iCell Network the contract to build the eastern portion of the island's ambitious nationwide Wi-Fi initiative. The IDA's initiative, called Wireless@SG, will provide free Wi-Fi access to all Singapore residents and visitors from overseas, and will be installed over the course of one year. iCell will also incorporate Firetide's recently announced HotView Controller software that will enable high speed mobility throughout the Firetide/iCell network. This capability allows mesh nodes operating in vehicles moving at high speeds such as police cars and ambulances, buses, and trains to remain connected to the network at all times. HotView Controller also enables a new class of mobile phones employing Wi-Fi technology, to roam freely through the network with continuous connectivity.

QUALCOMM Announces Agreement with Telecom Italia for BREW Solution Launch in Europe Original news source
QUALCOMM Incorporated and Telecom Italia, through its mobile unit TIM, the largest wireless operator in Italy, announced an agreement to launch wireless data services based on QUALCOMM's BREW solution. TIM plans to reinforce its leadership position in service innovation on 3G and HSDPA networks by making a variety of new applications and services available to its subscribers, including premium 3D mobile game titles by Gameloft through the BREW Gaming Signature Solution. With the uiOne offering, TIM users can also gain access to 'Idle Mode,' a dynamic TIM idle screen with the ability to subscribe to live content feeds, as well as downloadable 'Themes,' a series of skins that allow subscribers to customize the complete look and feel of their phone's user interface. Following launch of the new services, both the 3D mobile games and themes can be purchased and downloaded over the air using QUALCOMM's BREW solution.

The X-Series from 3 will be supported by the leading internet companies, cutting-edge handsets from the world's leading mobile manufacturers and premium customer service. Customers will be able to make unlimited calls from their mobile using Skype, watch their home television via their mobile using Sling, access their home PC remotely using Orb and have access to the best of internet and messaging services from Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger and Google. The X-Series from 3 will be priced like fixed line broadband. It will offer use of mobile internet services free at the time of use, for a flat fee. The X-Series from 3 will be available in the UK from the 1st December 2006 and in 3's other markets around the world in early 2007. Each 3 company will provide further details as they launch X-Series in their markets. The global launch of the X-Series from 3 is being made possible by the first two handsets that will support this full range of services: the Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950i.

QUALCOMM Introduces Single-Chip UMTS and HSDPA Solutions Original news source
QUALCOMM Incorporated announced an expansion to its QUALCOMM Single Chip (QSC) family to include support for UMTS. The new QSC6240 product for WEDGE (WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE) and QSC6270 product for HEDGE (HSDPA/WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE) are the world's first solutions to integrate a monolithic die - with integrated radio transceiver, baseband modem and multimedia processor - together with power management functionality into a single chip for WCDMA (UMTS) and HSDPA handsets. The cost and time-to-market advantages of the single-chip solutions will help drive wireless broadband and 3G adoption in mass markets around the world. Sun Microsystems, Inc., the creator and leading advocate of Java technology, announced it is releasing its implementations of Java technology as free software under the GNU General Public License version two (GPLv2). Available are the first pieces of source code for Sun's implementation of Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) and a buildable implementation of Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME). In addition, Sun is adding the GPLv2 license to Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE), which has been available for over a year under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).

Symbian Limited announced that 100 million Symbian smartphones have shipped to over 250 network operators worldwide since Symbian’s formation. Since the first Symbian OS phone, the Ericsson R380, shipped in 2000 Symbian has worked with an ecosystem of customers, partners, vendors, content players and application developers within a market place demanding ever increasing segmentation and customisation. This increased complexity has driven the demand for a powerful, robust, open operating system such as Symbian OS. VOXCOM Security Systems announced that it has completed an agreement with Infinity Systems Pty Ltd. to become the exclusive Canadian provider and licensee of Infinity's mobile video and remote monitoring services. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The new service enables home and business owners to use mobile phones, video surveillance and electronic devices, such as motion, temperature and flood sensors to monitor their properties remotely. Customers can choose how to be notified of an event via email, text message or an Emergency Response Operator when an alarm sensor is tripped. The service will allow consumers to control their security by conveniently accessing streaming video when and where they need it through a PC, mobile phone or PDA.

Visa’s Mobile Strategy Offers New Ways to Pay Original news source
Visa USA advanced its mobile strategy through the launch of a new pilot at its California headquarters. Following the successful completion of the industry’s first large-scale U.S. mobile payment trial at Philips Arena in Atlanta earlier this year, Visa is now testing the delivery of mobile payment coupons and rewards via text message, graphic and bar code images direct to consumers’ mobile devices. The pilot, which is scheduled to launch in November with approximately 500 Visa employees in California, is expected to expand to public trials over the next year. Pilot participants will receive payment coupons and rewards that can be redeemed at on-site cafes located at Visa’s corporate campus. Visa’s mobile strategy takes advantage of the scale and flexibility of its global network to deliver both payment and value-added mobile services that drive value to consumers, merchants, and issuers. Visa’s vision for mobile payment includes the secure, over-the-air delivery of payment account information to the mobile device, access to point-of-sale mobile payments using Visa Contactless and Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, as well as remote payments delivered through secure mobile messaging and the mobile Internet. Visa continues to evaluate mobile solutions that enhance consumers’ payment experience, including real-time payment notifications and security alerts, mobile coupons and rewards, relevant content downloads that allow consumers to make informed purchases, as well as applications that enable consumers to transfer funds to a friend or family member.

Boost signs up 40,0000 users for location service Original news source
Sprint Nextel Corp.'s teen-focused unit Boost Mobile said on Tuesday it has signed about 40,000 customers in the first seven weeks of its free trial of a friend locator service it plans to launch Nov. 20. The service ties satellite technology with software from start-up developer Loopt to enable users to find their friends' locations on a phone screen map or disclose their own location to friends who are nearby. Boost aims to win customer loyalty and revenue through commercial applications of location technology that is legally required to be built into U.S. cell phones to help emergency services find callers more easily. Boost, a provider of wireless services primarily to 14-to-25-year-olds, plans to offer its service for free until 2007 in the hope of getting customers so addicted they would be willing to start paying $2.99 a month.

Vodafone and Yahoo! to Launch Advertising on Mobile Devices Original news source
Vodafone and Yahoo! have formed a strategic alliance to pool their expertise to create an innovative mobile advertising business that will enhance the customer experience on mobile phones while providing both companies with a new revenue stream. Through this alliance, Yahoo! will become Vodafone’s exclusive display advertising partner in the UK. Yahoo! will use the latest technology to provide a variety of mobile advertising formats across Vodafone’s rich and varied content services. Yahoo!’s sales force and technology team will work with Vodafone to derive benefit from mobile’s unique advertising opportunities while delivering the best possible experience for both consumers and advertisers. Rakuten, Inc., Japanese e-commerce company, and NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced that their joint-venture company Rakuten Auction, Inc. is launching an auction service that does not require sellers or winning bidders to divulge private information to one another. The service will be available to PC users from today and will be listed in the i-mode portal from November 20. Compatible handsets for the new service, dubbed "Rakuten Auction," will be FOMA models sold since the launch of the 900i series (with some exceptions). As part of the service, a social networking site linked to the auction site will enable "Rakuten Auction" users to communicate with others who share a common interest in auctions.Rakuten Auction will handle deliveries and payments without requiring auction participants to reveal user information, and will provide easy guidance to using the system, taking part in auctions and viewing details of transactions.
